What can I give?
I have just finished a two-week workshop tour for Access to Music, where I spoke about what I have learned from my experiences in life, and business, which are one and the same. I have met some very good people along the way, and learned a lot about education, business, and entertainment. I have been in the business now for over twenty years, and there is still so much more to learn. Constant learning is the key: the more you learn the more you are able to learn.

The first thing I would to like to discuss is contribution. Ask not what you can get but what can you give. “Who can I help and what can I give?” is the new mantra. What type of life do you want to live? Where can you help the most people and really make a difference?

Take a look around at Planet Earth right now. Who is going to fix it?

Be nice to everyone you meet:

You're not better than anyone because you're a DJ or a producer or some other title you've given yourself. First and foremost, you’re a human being. So, treat people how you would like to be treated. It's so easy to think you’re more important because you have a title, but fame is fleeting and, afterwards, you’re just a regular Joe again. Remember the show biz saying, “You always meet people twice in the business, once on the way up and once on the way down.” So, be kind, because you never know whom your going to meet when you're sliding back down to earth.

Do more than you get paid for:

The more you put in, the more you get out. Make a lasting impression on the people you are serving. Your fan base, your network, your friends, your family, and everybody else you come into contact with. You’re in the entertainment business now so people buy in to your reputation. What kind of mark are you leaving? How are people talking about you? It's really important to take what ever you're doing to the next level. Give great service and people will always remember you as the person that did more than they needed to.

Take yourself seriously:

You are the business. You are the brand. You must work hard everyday to create success for yourself. Study your art and learn as much as you can about your business. It's important that you know about promotion, publishing, distribution, mixing, recording, the list goes on. You're a one person show now. It's up to you to use what God gave you and create something unique.

It's not a job it’s your lifestyle:

The people who enjoy their jobs don’t consider it work. Imagine getting up every day and running to your workplace, being the first one there and the last one to leave. Is your job like this? If what you do doesn't inspire this enthusiasm, you took a wrong turn somewhere. The path you're on will consume every single waking moment. Unless you have mad passion for what you're doing, you won't be able to keep it up for long. There will be days when it feels like work, so you better be passionate about what you're doing. The trick is to make it fun, and understand every day you get to be your own boss. Not everybody can do that.

No just means try some body else:

Don't take things personally when people don't get back to you. Get used to it and keep going. "Quitters never win and winners never quit." You need to develop a thick skin, because this is the norm. If you believe in your own abilities and know you have something then keep moving.

“Never Give Up”, is the motto.

Final thoughts:

We have entered a new phase on Planet Earth. This must be obvious to everyone right now. We must become smarter in the way we live our lives and the way we do business. We need to figure out how to give more value in life. We all want to be valued. Our time and energy are very important, how are we going to meet the demands of our culture? We all have the answer to this inside of us, it’s the same in life as it is in business.

Give more than you're paid for.

Ask how you can serve more.

Help as many people as you can.

These simple things will help you grow in life as well as in business.
